This map was kept rolled up from the bottom, so all but the top 2 inches is completely intact. It was rolled up on the original wooden dowel, which is still attached. The boundary decoration is missing at the top.
In the top left corner, “Map of Frederick County” still remains and is clearly readable. In the top right corner, the lower half of the Harper’s Ferry image is still intact and recognizable. The insets in the middle of the top are only partial.
The color boundaries of the townships are still very clear and the colors still clear.
The colored shadings of the insets are faded but the insets themselves are complete and clear (except for those at the top).
All of the informative tables and descriptions are very clear to read, including the section on soil types, road miles, primary schools, voting districts, and most jarring and historically important is the Census table breaking down the population by “Whites”, “F. colored” (freedmen) and “SLAVES”.
The original path of the B&O railroad is on this map, as well as the C&O canal and Monocacy Aqueduct.
The map is currently kept in an enclosed, homemade case made of a Lauan plywood back and a clear acrylic front, with a heavy duty picture wire on the back for hanging. The map is 38 " x 47". framed it is 42" x 49".
