The Japanese Noritake bowl set consists of a footed bowl, the underplate and a ladle. This can be used for whipped cream or any other food topping. The hand-painted vintage trio features the scenic “Tree in the Meadow” pattern with its orange and brown earth tones in a matte finish. The light green maker’s marks on the bottoms of the bowl and the ladle feature the Letter M (as in "Morimura") surrounded by a wreath, crowned by "NORITAKE" above and “HAND PAINTED” and “MADE IN JAPAN” below.
I believe this set is from around 1920 because that is when this pattern was started, and my maker’s mark research shows that this style of mark was used between 1918 and 1921, in the art deco period. Also, the ladle’s brown handle is different from all the other sets I see online, which are dated in the 1930s.
The bowl is 4.5" in diameter and 2" tall. The underplate is almost 5.5" in diameter and .5" tall. The “bowl” of the ladle is 1.75” in diameter. The set weighs almost 9 ounces.
This set is in very good vintage condition. The three pieces still have all of their paint and there are no chips, cracks or crazing. There are some areas of discoloration, due to its age and some areas of rubbing from shelf wear.
The pottery china ensemble looks like a work of art and would be a unique beautiful addition to a Japanese collection!
