Bar (Canteen) Manager (Mount Airy)

The Counties Four, VFW Post 10076 in Mt. Airy, MD is seeking a customer service-oriented, experienced, and organized Canteen (Bar) Manager. In this position, you will play a key role in handling the day-to-day operations of the bar staff. You will supervise, train, and schedule employees. You will ensure all health and safety procedures are met and contribute to the overall success of the business.

In order to succeed as a Canteen Manager, you should be observant and have the ability to think critically and efficiently. You should be a skilled communicator with excellent problem solving, observation, and interpersonal skills and you should be able to work with diverse personalities and diffuse tense situations.

This is a part time position which will require 15 – 20 hours each week.


Responsibilities:
• Manage business aspects of the canteen, such as maintaining liquor and food licenses, negotiating supplier contracts, taking inventory, reordering supplies, managing budgets, and setting goals
• Be accountable for all canteen money including registers, slot machines and gambling
• Prepare reports including slot machine earnings, bank deposits, receipts, petty cash, payroll, and sales tax
• Maintain required employee records and determine payroll taxes
• Create effective schedules and quickly resolve conflicts to ensure bar is staffed
• Set and enforce quality and safety controls
• Diffuse tense situations between patrons or staff members to prevent possible safety or legal issues, and eject unruly persons, if needed
• Serve as the point of contact for canteen repairs, maintenance, and deep cleaning needs
• Assist in planning and take part of promotional events
• Encourage and maximize the use of volunteers to perform canteen tasks to include events, cooking, cleaning, and performing repairs
• Manage meeting room rentals and schedule
• Make recommendations regarding process improvement, pricing, hours of operation, purchasing, salaries and equipment repairs/purchasing
• Streamline and modernize processes, procedures, and reports by fully utilizing our point of sale system and available technology
• Maintain the canteen electronic key card system for post members
• Coordinate financial matters with Post management and bookkeeper

Requirements:
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Bar, restaurant, or retail experience
• TIPS/TAMS or RAMS certified or ability to obtain
• Agree to background investigation and drug test
• Ability to count money and do math
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to diffuse tense situations and resolve conflicts
• Effectively delegate responsibilities and maximize resources
• Ability to walk, stand, and occasionally carry heavy (50 lbs.) items in a fast-paced, stressful environment

Desired Experience:
• Management experience
• Business accounting experience
• TIPS/TAMS or RAMS certified
• Familiarity with the Carroll County Health Department food license and liquor board regulations
• Use or management of point of sale system
